Hi, I'm Kyla.
Leader, yogi-wannabe, wife, mother, seeker of "why," punny-joke-loving realist, continually learning more, one day at a time. Let's work together to figure this thing out.
Successful therapy has a lot to do with a good personality fit. If you have been to therapy before, you know that the therapist really needs to be someone you feel comfortable talking to. If you haven't been to therapy before, know that it is encouraged to ask questions about the therapist to determine if they are a good match for you.
I consider myself a pragmatic therapist. A typical session with me will include thinking, feeling and doing. We will likely discuss your current struggles, other times you have experienced similar challenges and explore the ways you have dealt with the experience. We will also spend time recognizing actions that you are currently taking or want to incorporate into your day to help you challenge the struggles you are experiencing. I often suggest working on the ideas we come up with in session, prior to our next appointment. My clients are often looking for practical suggestions and have come to learn that practicing new skills outside of session truly makes a difference in their overall mood. While I may make recommendations and be able to offer insight I won't tell you what to do. You are the expert on your life and I see my role as a supporter that is able to stay objective and curious, when you and/or those closest to you are not able to fill that role.
While I specialize in EMDR, I am firm believer that no single perspective is best and prefer to integrate multiple therapeutic models to find the best fit for each person. In addition to EMDR I am experienced with the use of experiential and cognitive-based therapy interventions. I pull from many models of therapy including including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy and Attachment Theory.
